This past weekend, I did NOT just put the two youngers into the bathtub in the middle of the day just so I could clean my bathroom.
And if I had done that, I certainly wouldn't Not have handed them some toothbrushes so they could clean their teeth in the tub, while I cleaned the toilet. Nope! Not me!

I found this version doing a search on YouTube. I find is so fascinating that no matter who sings this song, or the size of the choir, it always sounds so powerful and Large! This is a great version b/c it has an at-home sing-a-long with the lyrics on the screen! *smile*
I'm not too sure what it is, but I always cry when it gets to the end of the song! H'mm....maybe it has something to do with the fact that it is such a powerful song and when I sing it (and I have to sing along no matter if I'm listening to a choir or not, lol...I just sing under my breath!) I imagine being in Heaven and seeing Jesus and standing in His glory, when all of us will be praising Him and singing songs just like this!

So there's this great shadow box that's filled with bells and has the vinyl I have on the front. So cute! Love it! I knew that's what I wanted to make. However, no matter where I searched, I could not find me a shadow box that was the right size or the right price. Harumph!
So I came up with this instead. It made me happy anyways!
The whole thing is one piece of vinyl, with the bell image on the bottom beneath the words, but there wasn't enough room to keep it together, so I had to be creative with my cutting. I ended up with the words on one side and the bell on the other. To top it off, I added a small tea light to the jingle bells....looks very cute lit up, but you need to be careful as it's not the most flat of surfaces. It took me some wiggling and adjusting to get it to stay in place and drip the least amount of wax!
I just found a square glass cup from the dollar store (the Dollar Max in Fleetwood is my favourite one to go to, but b/c it's in the opposite direction of where I usually shop or go, I don't pop in often enough. I used to live in the neighbourhood and was so excited when it opened up! The Largest Dollar Store in the Lower Mainland, I think it boasted! LOL Not too sure if it can still claim that or not, but it still makes me happy! The one in Powell River rocks too! But I digress...) Then I picked up a bag of jingley bells that was too expensive from Michael's. Simple as that!
I love having this on my table to smell everyday! It looks like a porcupine though, but how aromatic! It smells all of Christmas cheer!
Before the end of school, the class had a Pioneer Day, which they all had to dress up for. Of course, I forgot all about it! Luckily, MIL knows how to sew in a flash! She came by with an apron and a long skirt for Abi to wear. Then, Abi got out the shirt and overlay from her traditional Welsh costume, with a long-sleeved shirt underneath. (which we were given from a good friend who lives in Wales to celebrate Sant Dafydd Day, if you remember the post. Bryn still wears the jersey, now handed down from Kai, and Rhys can wear his old one! I love hand-me-downs!) She looked perfect with her braids too!
They had a challenge to be Pioneers all the way down to their lunches too, which meant not using her usual Disney Princess lunchkit. Instead, she was so clever and grabbed the empty ice cream pail I had just washed and set out for recycling pick up! She also didn't use her backpack, but carried her binder. She told me they used their own chalkboards to write on too!
I have to admit that when I grew up, I always thought I should've been born in a different era. I loved the idiologies and simplicities of other times. (I still do) But as much as I would love to "live off the land" with my own farm (oh, how lovely that would be. Be still my little heart!) I can't help but think of how much nicer life is today! 'Simplicity' then meant working for 12 hours each day with no central heating or hot water. I much rather like my luxuries today, thanks! But oh how adorable the little girls dressed then! *smile*

A real simple card using our shimmery white cardstock (I love how thick and shimmery this paper is!), Old Olive and Real Red cardstock, some DSP, drafter's vellum (it's thicker than typical vellum and I got it for free from my Hunny!) and a beautiful script stamp. Love it!
Bryn loves to copy and follows his big brother, so he wanted to show off his "creation" also!

So for right now, I'm going to enjoy her. For her individuality. For her passion. For her fun-ness. For her confidence. For her pride. For just being HER.
I pray she never loses those things. I loves her.
I emerge from my room, sniffing the air with curiosity. And see this:
The kids in the hallway, each with their own towel, wiping down the walls! Abi and Kai have the spray bottles: windex and simple green! Oh lovely! Even Rhys has gotten in on it!
They move their way down the hall and move into the bathroom.
(poor Kai was getting over a fat lip...a bizarre accident that happened when his mouth met Rhys' head.)
(ignore the bathroom decor, the renos for it are on our 2010 Things-to-do-desperately List!)
Then they move back into the hallway, working on the errant marker and pencil marks on the walls and doors.
I have to admit that I do have a very helpful bunch. I just wish they would do these things in the daytime, not at bedtime, and I sure wish they'd clean up what I ask them to, like their toys! But I'll accept this happily. After all, really, when is the last time I cleaned my walls with Windex? *smile*

The Tale of Three Trees
A traditional folk tale, retold by Angela Elwell Hunt
Once upon a mountain top, three little trees stood and dreamed of what they wanted to become when they grew up.
The first little tree looked up at the stars twinkling like diamonds above him. "I want to hold treasure," he said. "I want to be covered with gold and filled with precious stones. I will be the most beautiful treasure chest in the world!"
The second little tree looked out at the small stream trickling by on its way to the ocean. "I want to be a strong sailing ship," he said. "I want to travel mighty waters and carry powerful kings. I will be the strongest ship in the world!"
The third little tree looked down into the valley below where busy men and busy women worked in a busy town. "I don't want to leave this mountain top at all," she said. "I want to grow so tall that when people stop to took at me they will raise their eyes to heaven and think of God. I will be the tallest tree in the world!"
Years passed. The rains came, the sun shone, and the little trees grew tall.
One day three woodcutters climbed the mountain.
The first woodcutter looked at the first tree and said, "This tree is beautiful. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the first tree fell.
"Now I shall be made into a beautiful chest," thought the first tree. "I shall hold wonderful treasure."
The second woodcutter looked at the second tree and said, "This tree is strong. It is perfect for me." With a swoop of his shining ax, the second tree fell.
"Now I shall sail mighty waters," thought the second tree. "I shall be a strong ship fit for kings!"
The third tree felt her heart sink when the last woodcutter looked her way. She stood straight and tall and pointed bravely to heaven.
But the woodcutter never even looked up. "Any kind of tree will do for me," he muttered. With a swoop of his shining ax, the third tree fell.
The first tree rejoiced when the woodcutter brought him to a carpenter's shop, but the busy carpenter was not thinking about treasure chests. Instead his work-worn hands fashioned the tree into a feed box for animals.
The once-beautiful tree was not covered with gold or filled with treasure. He was coated with sawdust and filled with hay for hungry farm animals.
The second tree smiled when the woodcutter took him to a shipyard, but no mighty sailing ships were being made that day. Instead the once-strong tree was hammered and sawed into a simple fishing boat.
Too small and too weak to sail an ocean or even a river, he was taken to a little lake. Every day he brought in loads of dead, smelly fish.
The third tree was confused when the woodcutter cut her into strong beams and left her in a lumberyard.
"What happened?" the once-tall tree wondered. "All I ever wanted to do was stay on the mountain top and point to God."
Many, many days and nights passed. The three trees nearly forgot their dreams.
But one night golden starlight poured over the first tree as a young woman placed her newborn baby in the feed box.
"I wish I could make a cradle for him," her husband whispered.
The mother squeezed his hand and smiled as the starlight shone on the smooth and sturdy wood. "This manger is beautiful," she said.
And suddenly the first tree knew he was holding the greatest treasure in the world.
One evening, many years later, a tired traveler and his friends crowded into the old fishing boat. The traveler fell asleep as the second tree quietly sailed out into the lake.
Soon a thrashing storm arose. The little tree shuddered. He knew he did not have the strength to carry so many passengers safely through the wind and rain.
The tired man awakened. He stood up, stretched out his hand, and said, "Peace, be still!" The storm stopped as quickly as it had begun.
And suddenly the second tree knew he was carrying the King of heaven and earth.
One Friday morning, the third tree was startled when her beams were yanked from the forgotten woodpile. She flinched as she was carried through an angry, jeering crowd. She shuddered when soldiers nailed a man's hands to her.
She felt ugly and harsh and cruel.
But on Sunday morning, when the sun rose and the earth trembled with joy beneath her, the third tree knew that God's love had changed everything.
It had made the first tree beautiful.
It had made the second tree strong.
And every time people thought of the third tree, they would think of God.
That was better than being the tallest tree in the whole world.
This Christmas, may you feel the beauty of the season and may the power of the birth of a child be significant to you, and may you let His love in.

It's been busy! There is a lot to talk about. We're going through some changes here and making tough decisions. I will talk about them as soon as I can. Until then....

Everything was pre-cut and pre-stamped and all that fun stuff. Times 10! I put all the pieces into little printed baggies, along with envelopes, a sample card and simple instructions. (the cards are easy enough anyways to make)
Finished Product. This one is my favourite that I've made this season.

inside of the card included a Pale Plum cardstock for writing on, the Serene Snowflakes stamp set (My FAVE set from the Holiday Mini catalogue. LOVE IT!!! That, and Dasher, from the regular IBAC, are my two faves for the season), and some Dazzling Diamonds. And we're set!
The other 10 cards were of another design I CASEd from the Holiday Mini catalogue. I don't feel so badly about it though b/c I've seen so many other demonstrators use that one too! It's a beautiful card and I think mine turned out just as good!

So for $18, I got a nice huge box of Red Delicious. If they don't get eaten, surely I can bake with them. Can't I? Always being hopeful. ;)
When I brought them home, they stayed on the floor while I could start dinner. Once that was on the way, I peeked over at my Little Monkey to see what mischief he was getting himself into. And what do I see? He's made his way over to the box and climbed ONTO it!!!
I was quite surprised, to be honest! He's proud of himself!
Then he manages to pull out an apple from underneath himself!
H'mm...a snack! how handy!
He's so adorable. He's so clever. He makes me smile.

The kids got some mini pumpkins from Grandma & Grandpa, and Kai got one from Aldor Acres on his class field trip, plus we had one from our garden, all waiting to be made into faces. So, I grabbed an old and rather ugly fitted sheet that I no longer liked, spread it over the table, pulled out some markers for the kids, and we got to it!
I first got the kids to draw on the pumpkins what they'd like to be carved. I don't give them set rules or tell them how a face "goes", I let them use their imagination! I remember her first pumpkin, Abi just drew circles and lines! It's neat to see the kids design and draw up ideas, and to see how their talent changes over the years! Bryn still needs help, but it's still his pumpkin and he loves being involved!
After the drawings are done, I cut the tops off the pumpkins and get the kids to clean out the gunk! You can see how enjoyable this process is....and can probably guess how I ended up cleaning out most of them in the end! *smile* At that time, we also pull out the seeds so that Daddy can bake them later. (a tradition he grew up with and one I'm learning)
Next comes the actual carving of previous drawings. And yes, I did give my children sharp instruments to work with!!! From personal experience I have learned that so-called "safety" utensils can cause just as much harm! (Ow!) So I just give them the good stuff and supervise!!!!! I'm very proud to say that we had no injuries, accidents or mistakes! *smile*
Our neighbour friends were over and even they got into the mess with us! They had a good time and I enjoyed having them join in. It's always nice to see friends work together! Max & Teague helped both Kai and Bryn carve their pumpkins, which I thought was so nice of them. Team Work! (they used sharp instruments also, but their mom said it was ok...but said something about if they get hurt, they couldn't come home and bleed on her carpets!)
We ended up with some pretty imaginative creations that we were were all proud of!
That night, since Cousin Mia, Jenn & James were trick-or-treating with us, we got their pumpkins to join our family too. It was so fun having them all lit up with candles at our doorstep! (which isn't a step at all, but what else do you call it?) Carved pumpkins make me happy! *smile*
Jenn went all fancy and carved her large pumpkin to look like Pablo from the Backyardigans (Mia's favourite character! too cute! She was dressed up as Uniqua, also a character from the show...but only b/c a Pablo costume wasn't working out too well) Show Off!!! *giggle* I love fancy pumpkin creations. I'm just not picky enough or patient enough to put the work into it myself. But I love seeing all the pumpkins when we go door-to-door...and am amazed at how many people do the whole kit and make artwork out of these orange vegetables!

There is a verse in the Bible that I am trying to memorize:
Philippians 4:8 "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable---if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such thing."
It fits into every part of my life, and so I'm trying to apply it when it comes to what I read online (such as falling into those Hollywood gossip sites. Man, those are hard to ignore for me!) and what I watch. But it truely comes into play this time of year for me. Especially when I see all the decorations everywhere.
Has anyone else noticed how it has become a holiday of massacre? mayhem? death? evil? I see gravestones, dead bodies, hangnooses, Black Death figures, etc in yards, and I can't help but wonder why we do this? Why is it okay to celebrate these things for one day? Hallowe'en has given everyone a ticket that says we're allowed to partake in evil deeds and pretend to be a part of it, and I find it disturbing. What happens on November 1st? We're all 'back to normal' and suddenly death and murder and decay isn't 'cool' anymore. If that's so, then why is it okay for that one day? Or am I missing something? maybe it has come down to it that people aren't bothered by those things anymore either. After all, the biggest t.v shows and movies out there are about vampires and psycho killers.
But let's just put this aside for a moment and just say that perhaps it's just me. Maybe I'm being too sensitive. I need to grow up. I need to stop whining and Have Fun. Okay, I can handle that. Fine. But there are other bits that make this event difficult for me: My kids.
My children are sensitive. At first I would be a bit embarrassed that my children couldn't watch the regular movies that everyone else their age and younger could watch. The Incredibles? Nope. Monsters Inc.? Not likely! Abi would run to the other room when Barbie would face some danger or be scared and she'd never get to watch the end of the movie! Now I am finding that to be just fine with me. I have discovered that not only do they not like to be scared, but they are sensitive to witnessing someone do another harm, even if it's just something as "simple" as disobeying their parents! That's something I can be proud of! I WANT my kids to find things like that distressing, I don't want them to become desensitized! So how does this fit with my growing dislike for Hallowe'en? All the creepy decorations and costumes, of course!
Now, Abi and Kai are getting older and they are starting to handle the costumes better and can tell me that they don't like them without being frightened. But poor Bryn did not like it at all! There were a few houses that we had to walk away from! He didn't like our neighbour's costume, and he didn't like our other neighbour's paper skeleton on the door, and he certainly didn't like the electronic witch cackling at him with dry ice floating around the house on the next street! That's fine, I held his hand, reassured him that he was being very brave and didn't have to go to those houses, and explained that it was all pretend. But I find it tough. We tend to forget that there are many little kids out there still!
But speaking of little kids! I was appalled at how many Dead Cheerleaders and Corpse Brides costumes there were on TODDLERS!!! Seriously! I passed a few and was wondering what was going through their parents' heads. I told Abi that she could dress up as a bride one year if she wanted to...as long as it wasn't dead!!!!
But aside from that...why are we letting our kids take candy from complete strangers anyways??? They can't do it any other day but Hallowe'en, either! Isn't that confusing?
So, call me a Party Pooper, I'm a Big Girl and can handle it, but you've got to wonder about this so-called holiday. It's supposed to be FUN...but I'm finding it more disturbing. So much for kid's having fun...it's geared towards adults in every way, from decorations to costumes.
I would LOVE to find a venue that my children could be involved in. I wish our church was large enough to host a Harvest Party or something, or even the school. But instead, every year, we've gone out trick-or-treating. One day, we will hostess our own annual Harvest Party at our house, with games and fun. No dead things...other than leaves! lol Maybe we'll plan a Family Night and go out...or stay in and watch a movie with our lights off...think of something.
But instead, this year, I went out trick-or-treating and brought along with me a Bunny, a Princess and a Transformer! What a year it was for deciding costumes, too! Abi was lucky that Grandma Lynn had this costume in her closet for a while, so that was one down! Kai wanted to be a Skeleton, but I couldn't find one for him and I didn't know where to start or didn't have time to make him something, so we were very lucky that Grandma Lynn (our hero!!!) found a Transformer costume for him for 1/2 price! (he doesn't watch Transformers, doesn't have any toys of them, I don't even know if he knows what a Transformer is, but he wanted to be one!) And Bryn was too frightened at the idea of going out, so he didn't even want to think of a costume. Knowing that on the day of he would, so I planned that he could use our bumblebee costume. However, we couldn't find the wings anywhere! And I know it probably would've been find if he went out sans wings, but it bothered ME! So I searched and searched for something else, and came up with a Bunny costume that was given to us from Cousin Isaac (since he outgrew it) What fun!

We went out for about an hour with Cousin Mia and our neighbour Josh, and it was fun! (aside from the creepy houses and costumes, of course!) I find that a third of the houses in our neighbourhood are gone (or they don't answer the door) or they are too creepy for my kids (we steer clear from the ones with those spooky soundtracks playing) or the street isn't lit up enough for safety. So we hit maybe 30-50 houses. My kids were satisfied, but I'm realizing soon the older ones will want to go out longer! Next year, I'll have FOUR kids to take out and that should be interesting!
Bunny, Bumblebee, Snow White, Uniqua from Backyardigans, Elmo from Sesame Street (and Jody!) What a cute bunch they were!!!
Rhys stayed home and actually fell asleep on the couch for a nap just as we were starting to head out. Oh, and the orange juice in his bottle? not a good idea! he threw it up later! :(

*sigh* what a strange holiday we celebrate! The dressing up is still FUN and the candy still the Best....but still a *bit* creepy.
